  • Requirements

Replacement of 5 failed water heaters
  • Objective

Reinstate hot water services and enable the hotel to re-open

The hotel is a 330 bed 17 storey building which, due to catastrophic plant failure had been forced to close.
Horsfield were appointed in direct replacement of all 5 domestic hot water heaters.

Getting to the roof
Replacement of water heaters is a routine task for us and not something that presents any major challenges; roof-top plant rooms can change that.
From ground level delivery of the replacement units to the plant room would require careful planning and consideration, and getting to the roof was the first step.
The new heaters were delivered into the loading bay on the ground floor, then safely manoeuvred up a flight of stairs, 17 storeys in the lift, a further two flights of stairs onto the roof.

The roof-top journey
The shortest route to the plant room presented many obstacles, so it was decide that, once onto the roof, the units would be moved around the perimeter of the roof to get to an alternative plant room access door.
The heaters were moved one at a time on rollers over temporary bridges and plywood sheets to protect the roof membrane; this process would later be repeated in order to remove the failed units.

In the plant room
With the plant room cleared and prepared to receive the new units, the full installation was completed in 2 weeks.
